Brian Chavez
Bryan lived in the desert until he was 11 but for some reason longed to be on the water. Perhaps it was from watching "Flipper" and "Sea Hunt." When he was twelve he moved to the Chicago area and had his first opportunity to go sailing on a 40' Sparkman and Stevens designed sloop. Within a month he was sailing an El Toro around scuffing up the transoms of every boat in the harbor. For the last 32 years Bryan has been sailing and working on the water whenever possible. He is a research engineer at a nonprofit research institute, which allows him to teach on the water more then 100 days a year.
Bryan has taught at Club Nautique for four and a half years. He has a USCG Masters license and US Sailing certification in Basic Keelboat, Cruising, Coastal Navigation, and Costal Passage Making. He also enjoys teaching Celestial Navigation, Spinnaker, Basic Trawler, Bareboat Cruising Trawler and Twin Screw Trawler classes.
"My favorite class is Basic Keelboat because it's all about sailing. My favorite moments are when I see students that I had as a novice in Basic Keelboat, pass Coastal Passage Making a competent mariner."
