Gordon Hanson

Gordon Hanson

Gordo learned to sail at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, where he sailed dinghies, K-boats and trawlers. The most fun was the 3 months of sea time he logged on the "Eagle," the Academy's 295' tall ship. A retired USCG Captain, he spent much of his life in the Coast Guard, as a deck officer, engineering officer, and pilot. He rounded the "Horn" on a polar icebreaker enroute to Antarctica, crossed all the "lines" and sailed six of the seven seas. He flew hundreds of rescue missions as a USCG helicopter and C-130 pilot, including 4 years here in San Francisco.

Gordo holds a 50-Ton USCG Near Coastal license, and is a USSA and ASA certified sailing instructor, teaching courses from basic keelboat through advanced cruising and coastal navigation. He has taught and run charters in San Francisco since 2000. Gordo has skippered sailboats up and down the West Coast, Mexico, New England, Florida and throughout the Caribbean. While he has dabbled in racing, Gordo is a cruiser at heart, and spent much of the past two years circumnavigating the North Pacific and cruising Mexico on his Valiant 40 cutter. "I teach sailing because the students are always great and I like being out on the water. I enjoy passing on my joy of sailing and giving back some of the knowledge I learned at the taxpayers expense."
