Jim Hancock
Jim started sailing Hobie Cats and Lasers as a teenager in Northern California, cutting it up and narrowly avoiding disaster in the waters of Redwood City, Santa Cruz and Lake Tahoe. His love for boats and the water was further developed in college as he sailed Tech dinghies on the Charles River while earning a master's degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at MIT.
After college Jim went to work as a marine engineer for Exxon in Houston. His job responsibilities ranged from developing hydrodynamic computer models to the instrumentation of offshore barges and drilling rigs to sitting as an industry representative on a Coast Guard panel for lifeboat safety. Jim continued his sailing in Texas, crewing for friends and co-workers aboard Hobie Cats and J-24s.
Jim eventually returned to California where he started to get really serious about sailing. In 1994 Jim bought his own boat, a Freya 39, that he and his wife eventually took on a six-year, sixteen thousand mile cruise from San Francisco to Australia and many points in between. Between 1990 and 2000 Jim also did a number of deliveries in the Gulf of Mexico, on the west coast of the U.S. and two trips from Hawaii to California.
Jim began his career as a sailing instructor in 2000 as a volunteer teacher for the Lake Merritt Sailing Center. After returning from Australia in 2006 Jim dove into teaching head first, getting certified as an ASA sailing instructor, sitting for his Coast Guard 50 ton license and subsequently getting certified as a U.S. Sailing instructor through Bare Boat Charter and Coastal Navigation.
In his spare time Jim likes nothing more than to sail his own boat or to race as crew aboard other people's boats on the Bay. He just can't get enough!
