November 17 (Alameda)Truths, Rumors and Myths about your Captain's License. Presented by Maritime Institute. Learn the answers to all the questions you have about what it takes to get your Captain's License, why you should get your license and how to go about getting it done once and for all. |
December 1 (Sausalito)Practical Application – The latest navigational tools An overview of the latest in digital navigation aids including smartphone tools 3 main areas will be covered, including VHF-DSC radios AIS Navigation tools for iPhone and iPad |
December 15 - (Alameda) Five things you should know about Radar! Presented by Club Nautique instructor, Richard Foregger. This 1 hour seminar will introduce the audience to all the powerful tools that RADAR has to offer. It will also explain how RADAR works and how to use it. You will also learn the one very important thing to remember about any marine electronics. |

January 5 - (Sausalito)Don't get hit by a Super Tanker! Presented by Club Nautique instructor, retired captain and Cal Maritime graduate, Peter Leib. Peter will share his insights and perspectives of transiting the Bay from the merchant mariner's point of view. Captain Leib, a lifelong sailor, grand prix racer and world cruiser, will discuss aspects of commercial shipping important to yachtsmen, including laws, routes, identifying ships to determine their destination, ships' maneuvering characteristics and limitations, Vessel Traffic Control Systems, A.I.S., and the importance of a proper radar reflector in an effort to keep us all safely sharing the Bay. |
January 19 - (Alameda)From newbie to New Zealand in 6 years! A case study on how to leverage Club Nautique to get you and your mate there together. Club members Allan and Rina Alexopulos will explain how the club helped them prepare for their two year journey across the South Pacific to New Zealand. Allan will explain how both formal and informal training helped them successfully handle the challenges faced crossing the pacific, including the loss of their rudder 40 miles off the New Zealand coast in 30 knot winds and growing seas. Rina will explain how her training gave her the confidence to handle their Hunter 466 in extreme situations and become a true partner in all aspects of boat management. |
February 2 - (Sausalito)Chartering to Catalina from So.Cal Santa Catalina Island - located just 22 nautical miles off the Southern California coast, with dozens of protected anchorages, over 500 moorings and WARM WATER this gem of the Channel Islands is a boaters paradise. Join CN member Rod Witel as he details the ins and outs of Catalina chartering, navigation and all that the island has to offer including SCUBA, snorkeling, kayaking, parasailing, fishing, music/art festivals, camping, hiking, golf, zip lining and wild life viewing (including wild buffalo!) |

March 2 - (Alameda)Heavy Weather Preparation Devices and Skills Presented by Club Nautique Offshore Passage Making instructor and professional delivery captain, Arnstein Mustad of Mustad Marine. Learn about several different tools that you can deploy for handling heavy weather. We'll discuss the Jordan Series Drogue as well as the parachute and cone sea anchors. We'll talk about when and why to deploy these valuable tools. |
March 16 - (Alameda) Understanding San Francisco Tides & Currents We are very honored to welcome back local sailing guru and sailmaker, Kame Richards of Pineapple Sails, as he presents his talk on the tidal currents of San Francisco Bay. The talk will be of great interest to those of you who sail, kayak and swim the Bay. The talk is illustrated with slides from NASA’s U-2 high altitude reconnaissance aircraft. The photos show how to locate tide lines, and how to determine which way the water is moving on each side of the tide line. Understand how to use the powerful San Francisco tides and currents to your advantage. |
March 30 - (Sausalito) Cruise Planning for Points North of the San Rafael Bridge! Presented by Club Nautique owners, Don Durant and Dave Moore. We are going to have some fun this summer! Let's go to Petaluma, Vallejo, Benicia and the Delta. We'll talk about these great cruising destinations and pick dates to go sailing! |
