Coastal Passage Making Study Hall

This session summarizes the highlights of the CPM program, while focusing on important areas that are often passed over or misunderstood by students. The three modules are divided as follows:

Modules Include:
COLREGS – EMERGENCIES & FIRST AID

1. COLREGS – Covers key rules from the COLREGS, the pecking order, vessel types, distress signals, lights, sound signals and situational examples.
2. Emergencies – Covers preparation, damage control, flooding, fire, dis-masting, steering loss, radio distress calls and COB.
3. First Aid – Covers basic First Aid, including what to bring, checking the scene, assessing the injured, shock, heat & cold related emergencies, common boating injuries and major problems.

NAVIGATION – BOAT SYSTEMS & OPERATIONS

1. Navigation – Covers charts & publications, assembling materials, preparing the navigation plan, entering unfamiliar ports, fuel planning, tides and currents, compass corrections, GPS & Radar and aids to navigation.
2. Boat Systems – Covers plumbing systems, de-watering systems, electrical systems, communications, the diesel auxiliary and cooking systems.
3. Operations – Covers anchoring operations, overboard discharges and onboard routines including watch schedules and duty rosters.

WEATHER

1. Weather – Covers the fundamentals of “big picture” offshore weather, including the causes of weather, air masses and fronts, pressure systems, wind and, most importantly, how to read a weather map.
